Night lights

Gentle light for kids' rooms.

A good kids' night light gives just enough glow to comfort a child or guide a hallway trip, without the bright white light that makes it harder to settle. Warm, dim, amber-toned light is the aim. Cool blue-white light is the one to avoid near bedtime.

Beyond color, the practical questions are simple: does it run on batteries or a plug, can you dim it, and is it tough enough for a child to handle.

How to choose a kids' night light

Warm, dim light

Choose amber or warm-white at a low brightness. It is gentle on sleep and still enough to reassure a child or light a path.

Dimmable and timed

Adjustable brightness and an auto-off timer or motion sensor save battery and keep the room dark once everyone is asleep.

Plug vs portable

A plug-in night light is set-and-forget. A rechargeable, portable one doubles as a comfort object a child can carry.

Kid-proof build

If a toddler will hold it, pick a soft, durable, cool-to-touch design with no small parts.
