Weighted blankets

Gentle pressure for calm.

A weighted blanket uses evenly distributed weight to create a gentle, all-over pressure many people find calming at bedtime. The single rule that matters is weight: aim for roughly 8 to 12 percent of your body weight, chosen for the person using it rather than the size of the bed.

Fillers and construction do the rest. Fine glass beads give a thinner, more evenly distributed weight than plastic pellets, and good internal baffling stops the fill from shifting into one corner.

How to choose a weighted blanket

Weight by body, not bed

Pick around 8 to 12 percent of your body weight. Sizing to the mattress instead is the most common mistake, and it makes the blanket too heavy or too light.

Glass beads and baffling

Fine glass-bead fill sewn into small pockets lies flatter and spreads weight evenly. Loose or large-pocket fill tends to bunch up.

Mind temperature

Weighted blankets trap heat. Hot sleepers should look for a breathable cotton or cooling cover, or a lighter option in summer.

Not for everyone

They are not recommended for infants or toddlers, or for anyone with certain respiratory or circulatory conditions. Check first if unsure.

Frequently asked questions

What weight of weighted blanket should I get?

Around 8 to 12 percent of your body weight, chosen for the individual user. A common choice is a 15 lb blanket for someone near 150 lb.

Are weighted blankets safe for children?

They are not recommended for infants or toddlers because of the weight. For older children, size down carefully and check with a pediatrician first.
